'Embroidering Social History'
THREADS & YARNS & STITCHERY
St Peter's Parish Church Hall, Moorhead Lane, SALTAIRE, Shipley BDIS 4JH

We held first meeting of 2014 at the same venue as last year on the edge of Saltaire village.  We were delighted to have so many members and their guests present.

In the morning, Christine Driver from Empress Mills of Colne introduced us to the vast array of threads and other associated items that they sell and described some of the interesting uses that embroiderers and other textile craft workers could make of these items.  Many of these items were for sale and members took full advantage of this.  Our members left inspired with so many new ideas to work on.

Before lunch several of our members showed a number of interesting items of embroidery or related items and told the stories behind them.

After a good lunch Vivienne Brown, our afternoon speaker, a past tutor for the City & Guilds Creative Textiles at Huddersfield University and an experienced workshop leader presented  a talk following the history of embroidery from the time of Elizabeth I to the present day and exhibited some of her own work which draws on inspiration from the rich historical background of her craft, while in practice making use of modem technologies to reflect her interest in botanical art.
