Title:
AGM and Philip Warren: 'Modern Times'
Venue:
Rodley Ecumenical Church, Rodley, Leeds

Following our AGM and an excellent buffet lunch,  Philip Warren presented a talk entitled, 'Modern Times - Active sportswear as fashion inspiration, 1880- 1940'.

In his talk, Phillip,   as always, went  far beyond the facile historical presentation of sequential development.  Instead,  through the use of delightful, often amusing, slides he illustrated the development of style, development of textiles and the aspirations and conventions of period taste to the delight of all present.  Phillip also showed how "modern" styles owed much to many aspects of the past in both fashion for sport, day and street wear. Altogether a thought provoking and enjoyable occasion.

Philip is Curator of Collections for Leicestershire County Museums   and has particular responsability for the Fashion Gallery at Snibston Discovery Museum. (see the link to this site on our website.)  He is author of 'The Foundations of Fashion' an accompanying guide to the Symington Collection of corsetry.  He is currently working on a new exhibition of underwear to be opened in May 2011 at Snibston together with an exhibition of Utility Clothing.
