OF COSTUME AND TEXTILES
Date:
24/09/2005
Title:
A Day with the Tudors
Venue:
Victoria Hall, Settle, North Yorkshire

The meeting covered various aspects of this most popular period in English history. Brought together for the day under the roof of the delightful, recently refurbished old Music Hall, three knowledgeable in-house members presented costume and underclothing of the era, from handling-collections made for re-enactments; relevant slides and videos also brought the period to life.

Perhaps the most unusual contribution to our meeting was presented by local historian, Alan Hemsworth, who highlighted  Tudor Nursery Rhymes and explained their amusing and frequently political undertones.

The day also featured details and photographs of Manchester's recently acquired 17th century beaded satin bodice. On your behalf, the Society has already given a donation towards its urgent stabilisation but more is needed; contributions were invited and there was information to peruse on the day. The V&A describe it as a 'very rare, beautiful and interesting' example, dating from the 1650's. With our help,  the conserved item should be on display in time for our visit to Manchester in February next, when our patronage will be publicly acknowledged.
