Women Travellers Exhibition

Bankfield Museum, Halifax

24 November 2018 to 25 May 2019

Focusing on the lives of four extraordinary women; Anne Lister, Edith Durham, Liz Humphries and Gertrude Bell.
This exhibition will tell the story of the journeys they took, the objects they collected and the many people they met along the way.
Objects displayed will include some of the outfits they wore to travel in, notebooks, photographs and the many fascinating items they brought back.Come and discover stories of happiness, loss and amazing achievements!


Call for Participants: Fashion In Yorkshire 1939 – 1999

A workshop exploring women’s experience of everyday clothing
\r\nWednesday 11  September 2019, 12.15 – 3.45pm.
\r\nLeeds Discovery Centre,  Carlisle Rd, Leeds LS10 1LB

Supported by the Leeds Museums and Galleries / Cultural Institute Cross-Disciplinary Innovation Fund.
\r\nDo you have an interest in fashion and clothing? Were you involved in the Yorkshire clothes manufacturing industry? Or are you a home dressmaker? And do you like to shop for fashion or have fond memories of shopping in Yorkshire?
\r\nIf yes then we want to hear about your experiences, stories and memories. This workshop aims to investigate the history of Yorkshire from the end of WW2 up to present day through the lens of dress and fashion.During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to get up close and find out more about a selection of garments from the Leeds Museums and Galleries and Yorkshire Fashion Archive collections.

 We then want to hear about you and your experiences of making, buying or wearing clothes to explore how ordinary
\r\npeople have shaped fashion. If you worked in the clothes manufacturing industry we want to hear your stories to      uncover that untold history.Your stories will be recorded so we can then better understand the place clothing had in the lives of Yorkshire women.

A buffet lunch will be provided for all participants and there will also be a tour of the Dress collection store at Leeds Discovery Centre.
